The Insider’s Guide to Nairobi

Previous In Vibrant Company featured guest and London transplant, Adah Esomonu, followed her heart to Nairobi. It took some getting used to the famous East African city, but she carefully crafted a short list of favorite spots that entice her eyes, mind, and tastebuds. The former banker shares an insider’s guide to the bustling city.

Where to Live - Lavington

A high-income suburb located north west of the City Center

Where to Stay - Tribe Hotel

Perfect for the traveller who wants to be in the mix. Situated within Nairobi’s diplomatic district and next to the Village Market, the location is superb.

Where to Stay - Radisson Blu

Perfect for the business traveller. The hotel is located in Upper Hill which is the business district. Note: the interiors are better than the exterior and every Sunday, the hotel hosts an extravagant brunch.

Where to be Photographed - Giraffe Manor

We’ve all seen the breathtaking images. Breakfast and frolic with photo-ready Rothschild’s giraffes at this exclusive boutique hotel and sanctuary. Tip: the 12-room hotel books up a year in advance so plan ahead. No, you can’t show up just for a meal. You’ll need to be an early riser and staying guest for this envious image as the giraffes roam freely in the mornings.

What to See - Maasi Mara National Reserve

It would be worth it to leave Nairobi for some time and traverse the famous Savannah wilderness at Maasai Mara National Reserve in southwestern Kenya. You could be lucky to catch a glimpse of lions, cheetahs, elephants, wildebeest or hippos. The area nearby also includes Maasai villages. Tip: The park has different options for lodging but stay at Keekorok Lodge if you prefer traditional accommodations.

A Weekend Escape - Almanara Luxury Resort

You’ll have to hop on a plane to get here and it will be well worth your time. Located on the white Diani beaches just south of Mombasa, Almanara can only be described as “boastful.” The clear waters of the Indian Ocean and vast sands will leave you stunned. The resort is exclusive, quiet and far away from hustle and bustle. The accommodations are deliberately limited, there are only six individual villas and five rooms in the boutique hotel.

Where to Eat - Cultiva Farm

Organic farm to table pop-up located in Nairobi’s Langata suburb that closes during safari season. Founder Ariel Moscardi, who studied at Le Cordon Bleu, originated this concept in Ecuador. He’s exceedingly particular about the food suppliers and only uses in season ingredients. The food is fresh and flavorful and the experience original.

Where to Eat - Mama Rocks Gourmet Burgers

Think Kenyan street food with a gourmet twist. This food truck situated just south of Lavington, offers unique beef, lamb, goat and chicken burgers flavored with ingredients as diverse as Nigerian suya spices or Sudanese Shata inspired mayonnaise. There’s seating too. The vibe is laid back and comfortable but if that’s not your scene, they deliver!
